When do you call the midwife?

When do you call the midwife?

After you give birth, the postpartum begins. In the first 8 to 10 days, the maternity nurse supports in the care of the baby and does medical checks on mother and child. We work closely with the maternity care and are medically responsible. In the first week we will visit the maternity ward several times. During these visits we discuss how things are going, how you experienced the birth and we also do medical checks such as measuring your blood pressure, checking any stitches and doing the heel prick on the baby.

Emergency cases we are available 24 hours a day. Is there no emergency? Then you can reach us during the day at this number: 06-232 95 662.

In the following cases, we think it is important that you contact us:

  • If you can't urinate (properly) within 6 hours of delivery or feel in the first few days that you can't urinate sufficiently
  • In case of fever (rectal temperature >38gr).
  • In case of sudden symptoms; headache, being starry, vomiting, pain in the upper abdomen or pain between the shoulder blades.
  • A thick, red or painful leg.
  • If you sleep extremely little and are irritable, angry or restless as a result.

With the baby:

  • For blue coloring of the skin or lips.
  • In case of yellow color of skin or eyes.
  • In case of poor drinking (if this is a one-time event, it is not a cause for concern) or repeated spitting up.
  • Bij een rectale temperatuur <36.5gr of >37.5gr; meet dan de temperatuur 1 uur later na aanpassen van de hoeveelheid kleding van de baby. Indien de temperatuur niet verbetert neem dan contact op.
