A baby's sleep cycle: what parents need to know

A baby's sleep rhythm is very different from that of an adult. A baby needs feeding every few hours and, for that reason, needs to wake up every few hours.

As expectant parents, this is important to know because this is a huge adjustment in your life. Sleeping is a skill that babies need to learn. Falling asleep and sleeping through cannot be done by themselves right away; this comes with time. A baby's sleep cycle lasts about 45-50 minutes. After this, the next sleep cycle starts, the baby does not manage to sleep through then, the baby wakes up.

A newborn baby sleeps as much as 18-20 hours a day. A day and night rhythm the baby develops in the first few months.

There are many reasons why babies wake up and cry. Babies are not used to being alone in a crib and often seek the security of parents. If the baby wakes up, check if the baby needs to drink, if the baby's temperature is good, if the diaper is clean or if the baby is calmed by being close to the parents.

With time, it will become clear more quickly what the baby needs. Be patient, alternate and take your rest when possible.
